The Rustenburg municipality said yesterday it would neither suspend nor fire a councillor accused of rape and attempted murder unless he was found guilty.

David Titi Pilane was granted bail of R2000 this week in the Tlhabane magistrates' court where he appeared for allegedly deliberately infecting his lover with HIV.

Rustenburg municipal spokesman Butler Matlapeng said Pilane would continue serving as a councillor until the completion of his case.

"We are not going to comment on the matter until the court makes a decision.

"For now, he is innocent until proven guilty," said Matlapeng.

Pilane, 35, of Tlhabaneis also charged with assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

It is alleged he deliberately had unprotected sex with his lover of three years. The woman, despite having discovered his status in June last year, only opened the case against him last month.
