Volkswagen South Africa invited the media to a lunch in Fourways, Johannesburg, last year to reveal what was then a big surprise, the Citi R.

But the Citi R was officially launched to the media in Port Elizabeth last week.

Citi Golf has been VWSA's success story in recent years.

However, even good things have to come to an end.

The Citi is tired, whether there is an R at the end or not.

The new Citi R is unattractively priced at R115920.

You have an option of paying an extra R620 for metallic paint.

At this price, one can purchase a Ford Fiesta or Nissan Micra with enough safety features as standard.

Under the skin, Citi R boasts a 1,8litre petrol engine producing 90kW.

The new Citi R-line package includes a 3-spoke sport steering wheel with aluminium trim, silver dials, vents and sill.

Silver foot pedals, a rear spoiler and a fully integrated body kit.

Included in the package is a front-loading CD- MP3 player with four speakers.

Also in is a double exhaust, lowered suspension and 15 inch 6 spoke alloy wheels.

Front sport seats and tinted glass all round are standard.

The transponder immobiliser, child-proof locks on rear doors and a remote central locking and alarm system are added.

According to VWSA, Citi R-line will appeal to enthusiasts looking for a real performance package without compromising on specifications or comfort.

The Citi R-line is equipped with a diagonally linked dual-circuit hydraulic break system with red disc callipers and self adjusting rear drums.

The Citi R is a limited edition.
