There are some things you either love or hate, and other things you might have mixed feelings about.
And the same goes for cars.
When I first laid eyes on the new Mitsubishi Outlander, I did not know if I liked it or hated it. It is one of those cars that you need some time to assess.
I am still making up my mind about the car, though a big plus factor is that it is a clever little number that has most of the goodies one needs in a family car.
The new model is as slim and trim as its predecessors. It gives you good aerodynamics and gets the best dynamic response from the engine, the brakes and the suspension.
To achieve this, the car has an aluminium roof panel, the design of which exploits the expertise garnered from a similar, weight-saving approach pioneered in the Lancer Evolution.
The 2,4litre petrol engine is all aluminium, a lightweight block now resides under the twin-cam multivalve cylinder head.
The engine is mated to a sophisticated, six-speed, constantly variable transmission with the option of driving only two, or all four wheels by means of Mitsubishi's rally-proved all-wheel-control system.
The car is fitted with four airbags, ABS, electronic brake-force distribution and stability and traction control.
The new Mitsubishi Outlander retails for R299900 inclusive, with a two-year or 100000km warranty and a three-year or 60000km maintenance plan.
