A man who allegedly believed that sex with his teenage daughter would bring him good luck continued with the abuse despite staying poor.
The man, 47, from KaNyamazane near Nelspruit, was told by a traditional healer in Swaziland in 2003 to have sex with his daughter, then 15.
Constable Chicco Nkosi said that when the girl refused to sleep with her unemployed father, he started beating her up whenever her mother, a domestic worker, went to work.
The teenager finally agreed to sleep with her father.
She fell pregnant but her father allegedly kept her mother from speaking out by threatening to have her deported to Swaziland.
The girl, now 19, gave birth to a baby girl two years ago.
The man, originally from Swaziland, was eventually arrested and appeared in court yesterday.
"He did not deny nor regret his actions. He still believes it will bring him good luck," Nkosi said.
l Another man from the same area allegedly fathered three children by his daughter after convincing his family that incest was "biblically OK".
His trial starts in the Nelspruit regional court next week.
