The Virginia Tech massacre, in which 32 students and staff were killed by a student last week, conjures up an eerie spectre for learning institutions saddled with serious problems of indiscipline and security.

Though cynics might dismiss prospects of a similar flashpoint at local schools as an impossibility, it would do us well to see the Virginia massacre as providing useful lessons and an opportunity to take preventative measures.

The tragedy serves both as a wake-up call and a clarion call to action for education authorities and parents to treat security and indiscipline at schools more seriously.

We dare not find ourselves crying over spilt milk one day when we could have made hay while the sun shone.
