The violent protests in Khutsong township, near Carletonville, demand the government's urgent attention and resolution.

Life has again been hell during the past two weeks as residents and pupils resist the incorporation of the area into North West.

Schooling has come to a halt. Councillors live in fear and others have fled the area.

Pretoria seems to have turned a blind eye, despite the fact that residents have shown that they have lost confidence in local councillors.

President Mbeki must act swiftly to explore amicable ways of defusing the crisis before it is too late.

Turning a blind eye to this explosive situation will not do the government, which was elected by the people in the first place, any good.
