No pay, no motivation

Poor working conditions in KwaZulu- Natal hospitals have led to unmotivated nurses providing poor service.

These are some of the grievances contained in a memorandum handed over by more than 2000 members of the National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) to the Department of Health at Edendale Hospital yesterday.

Nehawu spokes-man Super Zuma said they chose to march to Edendale Hospital because it was one of the hospitals most in need of the department's attention, particularly regarding the nurses' working environment and pay.

He also said the salaries the nurses received did not reflect their work load, which was demotivating.

Zuma said research conducted between February and last month indicated a shortage of more than 1900 nurses in the province. - Sne Masuku
