Two Mpumalanga detectives who allegedly tried to extort money from a robbery victim have been arrested and charged with corruption.

Detective Inspector Shembisa Jan Maphanga, 44, and Detective Constable Sontanya Collen Malatji, 27, were arrested on Tuesday.

They appeared in the Middelburg magistrates' court on corruption charges on the same day.

They were each granted R3000 bail and their case was postponed to May 30 for further investigation.

The two allegedly tried to extort money from Peter Sitanya, who had had his furniture and vehicle stolen from his house on January 12.

They allegedly called him on his cellphone on April 10 and told him his vehicle had been recovered.

Captain Leonard Hlathi from the provincial commissioner's office in Middelburg said the two detectives went to the complainant's home the same day.

They demanded R5000 for the car to be released to him.

Sitanya said the two took him to the Standard Bank ATM, where he withdrew R1000 and gave it to them.

He also said that the next day, Malatji gave him back the R1000.
