The United Democratic Movement in Eastern Cape yesterday called for the suspension of Ntabankulu mayor Phumzile Matshoba, who was recently arrested in connection with the misuse of funds.
Matshoba, 39, appeared briefly in the local magistrates' court on Tuesday facing a charge of fraud, alternatively theft.
UDM spokesman Wandile Tsipa said Matshoba should be suspended with immediate effect pending the outcome of the case.
Matshoba, who is also OR Tambo ANC regional chairman, was accused of defrauding the municipality to the tune of R56000.
His case was postponed for a bail application.
"It worries us that a person of the stature of a mayor could allegedly be involved in an act of crime.
"The electorate is yearning for service delivery," Tsipa said.
Matshoba is no stranger to controversy .
In 2004 he and Ntabankulu municipal manager Koko Pinyane, human resources manager Thandolwethu Manda and municipal engineer Mzuvukile Guzana were arrested by a joint anti-corruption task team.
They were charged with defrauding the municipality of more than R71000 for private travel and accommodation.
However, they were subsequently acquitted by the Mount Frere regional court.
