Schools in and around Khutsong township were deserted yesterday as pupils continued boycotting classes in protest against Merafong municipality's incorporation into North West.

The Anti-North West Forum's Paul Ncwane said only teachers were present at most Khutsong schools.

Teachers and pupils have boycotted classes since last week.

Ncwane said pupils, including his child, did not want to write exam papers set by the North West Education Department.

He said residents were to meet at the Khutsong Stadium yesterday.

"We expect the community to give us a mandate on what to do next."

Police spokesman Superintendent Louis Jacobs said no incidents had been reported in Khutsong on Tuesday or yesterday.

Last year the Merafong local council, which administers Khutsong, was incorporated into North West.

Parts of the municipality previously fell under Gauteng.

The move evoked strong criticism and resulted in violent protests by Khutsong residents. - Sapa
