Murder trial put on hold

Sipho Masombuka

The trial of two suspects in the gruesome murder of three Mamelodi schoolgirls in April last year was yesterday postponed until today so that the accused could consult their newly appointed lawyers.

The two made a brief appearance in the Pretoria high court charged with the murder and rape of Tsholofelo Aphane, 19, Lerato Dinisa, 18, and Lindiwe Mbonani (age not given), all of section "R" in Mamelodi.

The girls' half-naked bodies were found dumped behind the Mamelodi Crossing shopping centre in Mamelodi West.

Their hands and feet were bound, and a white substance was oozing from their mouths.

A post-mortem revealed that they had been strangled.

DNA analysis has linked the suspects to the rape and murder of the girls.

The prosecution maintains that the accused acted to "accomplish a common purpose" when they allegedly committed the crimes.
