In his autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom, Nelson Mandela, pictured, describes education as a great engine of personal development.

He also says it is through education that a peasant's child can become a doctor, engineer, and so on.

It is, therefore, important for us to encourage our youth to take their education seriously.

At the same time, our education system must meet our economic needs.

The country has lots of scholars who are unemployable because of our education system.

I think it is time we introduce practical subjects and skills that will give scholars the opportunity to be able to start their own businesses and also to become employable.

The current education system at public schools robs scholars of the opportunity to gain skills that are important in a developing country like ours.
