Sowetan's latest nation-building project, the Stop Crime Drama Festival, was a resounding success.
It was held at the Mmabatho Mmabana Cultural Centre in Mmabatho in Mafikeng, North West, at the weekend.
Sponsored by the National Arts Council and North West Arts and Culture Department, the festival is part of Sowetan's strategy against crime and criminality.
About 10 plays by amateur playwrights, actors and directors were performed over two days. The festival, which joins several other youth and community development activities of the Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation, has been running for 10 years.
Professionals who helped with workshops, auditions and preparing the productions included Duma Mnembe, Monde Mayephu, Ntshieng Sithe, Chief Siboa, Thapelo Motloung, Siyabonga Mabena and Lubisi.
In its first two years the project had a resounding and positive affect on Gauteng's youth.
It has unearthed talent and catapulted many players on to the professional stage.
But the project's core aim is to nip crime in the bud by exposing its futility and consequences.
North West has hosted the festival nine times.
