One thing is for sure, once you've bought mom a Subaru Forester, the kids will be at school way before the morning bell rings, and the fresh bread bought from the supermarket will still be warm when she gets home.

The Subaru Forester is certainly one of the most exciting, spacious, versatile and practical vehicles on the market today.

Our used test car for this week was a 2004 Subaru Forester 2,5XT with automatic transmission.

The Forester is one of Subaru's most popular models, not only in South Africa, but worldwide. It combines the typical all-wheel drive performance Subaru is known for with the practicality and loading space of an MPV. And it looks good too. Our used model might have clocked up 103000km, but the beautiful condition of the body and the interior refutes the high number of kilometres, again proving that a Subaru is well built, and reliability and durability is ensured. The finish inside is also of good quality and it will take some time for it to show its age.

The way the controls are situated on the front console is very simple and it doesn't take a minute to see where everything is and how it operates. Our test model comes with a long list of standard luxury features.

The heart of the Forester is its well-known 2,5-litre four-cylinder force-fed Boxer engine mated to an awesome four-speed automatic transmission sending power to all four wheels.

The turbocharged engine delivers 169kW of power and a very useable 320Nm of torque.

To reach the 100kmh mark won't take longer than seven seconds while the top speed is 210kmh.

Because of the all-wheel drive system, the vehicle has an excellent grip on gravel or wet surfaces. The other big plus, combined with the all-wheel drive, is the good ground clearance.

At less than R200000 it certainly seems like a great buy, and the two-year unlimited mileage should also ensure some added peace of mind.
