State wants strike ended

Elisha Molefe

A high-powered delegation from the North West Department of Education will meet with striking Merafong teachers today in an attempt to end the strike.

More than 800 teachers in Khutsong, which falls under Merafong, downed tools last week after they had been put on North West's payroll this month.

The teachers were put on the province's payroll after the recent incorporation of the area into North West.

Pupils joined the protest, disrupting classes.

The residents of Merafong have resisted their incorporation into North West. They want to be part of Gauteng.

The Anti-North West Forum, which supports the teachers' action, accused North West Premier Edna Molewa of misinforming the public by claiming she had consulted them at an imbizo and that they had agreed to the incorporation.

According to Charles Raseala, a department of education spokesman, the meeting with the teachers will decide on a way forward.

"We will have to wait for the outcome of the meeting before we can comment," he said.
