A 22-year-old man was killed and a boy was wounded during a shooting at a tavern in Phola village near Mafikeng, North West, at the weekend.

Monnathebe Mosimanegape died on the scene after he was shot in the chest on Saturday morning. Tebogo Matsheka, 17, was wounded after he was shot in the leg. Matsheka was taken to Mafikeng Provincial Hospital.

Captain Lesego Metsi said four armed men entered the tavern. The men switched off the lights and started shooting randomly .

Metsi said police found seven spent gun cartridges at the scene of the crime.

"During our investigation we found that these people were looking for a particular man who is a former prisoner and they mistook Mosimanegape for him," Metsi said.

He said one suspect is being detained for questioning. The rest are on the run and police are still looking for them.

Police suspect the gunmen might be responsible for a robbery at a chicken outlet in Unit 9 on the same day.

An amount of R2500 was stolen and a 33-year-old woman was shot during the robbery.

The woman was admitted to Mafikeng Provincial Hospital.
