Cyril Xaba, the KwaZulu-Natal provincial legislature's chief whip, has welcomed the resignation of Petrus Mahlangu, the Agriculture and Environmental Affairs Department's chief financial officer.

Mahlangu tendered his resignation last Tuesday.

Jabulani Mjwara, the departmental head, also requested special leave on the same day. The two men were investigated for overspending more than R100million in the 2004-05 and 2005-06 financial years.

The resignation and special leave request comes after huge criticism from opposition parties and the ruling party. Xaba said they welcomed Mahlangu's resignation with open arms.

"We wish to welcome his abrupt resignation while facing a string of financial misconduct charges.

"We consider his resignation as good riddance. The KwaZulu-Natal public service can ill-afford people like him."

He said it was also a good idea for Mjwara to go on leave.

"It is wise to let the head of department go on a long leave of absence while the process of the law takes its course.

"We wish to warn all senior management involved in any mismanagement or corruption to jump ship before we probe them. If they don't jump we will push them by simply throwing the Public Finance Management Act book at them," said Xaba.
