Councillors read riot act

Action will be taken against councillors who do not perform, President Thabo Mbeki assured Soweto residents during the Gauteng Presidential Imbizo at the weekend.

Action will be taken against councillors who do not perform, President Thabo Mbeki assured Soweto residents during the Gauteng Presidential Imbizo at the weekend.

He urged the residents to write to him should councillors fail to perform.

"ANC councillors were put in power to represent the people. We will not take them to Pretoria, we will take them to Luthuli House and will chuck them out," he told the crowd to roaring applause.

He was addressing about 300 people at the Safa Simba stadium at Klipspruit.

Mbeki spent most of the day speaking to residents as they brought their problems to him, some crying, others angry and passionate, and some overwhelmed to be speaking to him directly.

Housing topped the list of complaints from the residents.

Gauteng housing MEC Nomvula Mokonyane said in response the government was aware of the housing challenge. She said more houses will be built at Doornkop in Soweto.

Gauteng premier Mbhazima Shilowa said the City of Johannesburg had a plan to deal with the housing challenge and simply had to communicate it to the people. - Sapa
