A man who allegedly stabbed a pregnant woman to death before chasing, raping and killing her sister-in-law, was stoned to death by an enraged mob.

Police also confirmed that the man, identified as Emmanuel Mokwele, 25, was wanted on a separate rape charge.

The man confronted Sarah Mashalane and her sister-in-law, Morongwa Mohlabeng, in a bushy area at about 8.30am on Tuesday.

The two were walking from GaMokhurumela village outside Senwabarwana in Limpopo to collect their monthly child support grants from the nearby Letswatla village.

Mohlabeng, 25, was pregnant.

The suspect stabbed Mohlabeng in the chest and face, while Mashalane fled.

After leaving Mohlabeng for dead, the man chased Mashalane and caught her.

He then raped her and stabbed her several times. Mashalane, whose clothes he ripped off, died at the scene.

Mohlabeng managed to crawl to a nearby village. She was rushed to Ratshatsha Health Centre where she died on arrival.

The police were called in, but the enraged local community also went in search of the culprit.

At around 6.30pm, the suspect was spotted in the nearby hills and the community gave chase.

The suspect was ultimately cornered and stoned to death by the mob.

A cellphone and a R100 note, apparently taken from the murdered women, were found on his body.

Sowetan yesterday spoke to Raesibe Mashalane, the mother of slain Sarah Mashalane. She said she was still battling to come to terms with her daughter's death.

Mohlabeng's husband, Sidney Mohlabeng, 31, lost his job in January after the company he worked for in Pretoria collapsed.

"All my future plans have crumbled. I will never forgive her killer," he said.

Meanwhile, Blouberg municipality mayor Refilwe Kubyana, who also visited the bereaved families of the women, said they would assess the two families' situation before deciding whether or not to help with funeral costs or not.
