Sowetan's nation-building philosophy and work is being demonstrated by several youth and community development events this weekend.

Tonight, tomorrow and on Sunday the Stop Crime Drama Festival features the work of more than 10 youth groups at the Mmababana Mmabatho Cultural Centre in Mafikeng, North West.

Forming part of Sowetan's multi-pronged anti-crime and anti-criminality campaign, the festival is sponsored by the National Arts Council and North West's arts and culture department. It has been running for a decade.

In Johannesburg on Thursday Sowetan, together with Absa and the Council for Early Childhood Development (ECD), will honour the unsung heroes of this crucial foundation-phase sector of the public education system.

These awards programmes, which have also been running for more than a decade, acknowledge the hard work, dedication and passion of people involved in ECD education and training at creches and kindergartens.

The Sowetan, Sacecd and Absa ECD Excellence Awards recognise excellence in the following categories: best in ECD resources and training, best ECD home-based centre or playground, top ECD practitioner and best ECD community-based centre.

Nation-building returns to Mmabatho in Mafikeng, North West, on Saturday next week with the fourth heat of this year's Sowetan and Anglo American Young Communicators Awards competition. Heats have already been held in Mpumalanga, Free State and Northern Cape.

The youth-development programme empowers pupils in grades 11 and 12 with sound writing, speaking and English skills to help them take control of their lives and contribute to their communities.

The next five elimination events are in Limpopo on May 5, Western Cape on May 12, KwaZulu-Natal on May 15, Gauteng on May 19 and Eastern Cape on May 26.

Another event linked to Sowetan's nation-building philosophy and work is the sixth annual Divas' Concert. The theme of the concert is "Together, fighting crime and the abuse of women and children". It takes place at Supersport Park, in Centurion, Pretoria, on April 29.

The concert will feature popular local singers Nhlanhla Mafu, Zamajobe, Siphokazi, KB, Judith Sephuma, Rebecca Malope, Sibongile Khumalo, Letta Mbulu and others. US stars Oleta Adams and India Arie will also make beautiful music.
