Simphiwe Mkhize, a deaf actor who has landed a role in adult TV soapie Muvhango, is out to prove that deaf people can be good actors.

She has, however, reached the conclusion that discrimination is an pervasive phenomenon in the real world.

Mkhize, who is among the new recruits in the Venda drama series, told Sowetan that deaf people are still discriminated against in South Africa.

She feels that her role in Muvhango will give viewers a deeper understanding of deaf people.

Born in Pimville, Soweto, Mkhize plays Kukie Mosotho, a deaf character who works for Mukwevho Milling.

Mkhize is looking forward to proving that deaf people can be good actors.

She defined her move as a pleasant and fulfilling challenge.

"Joining a successful and winning team is always a pleasure. I can only do my best to add to the talent of the rest of the Muvhango cast. I'm happy and certainly honoured to be there."

She is certain that her character will have a positive affect and will educate the public about her disability.

Mkhize is not new to the acting industry.

In the past she has been involved in Deaf TV, which is broadcast on SABC3 and has also acted in shows such as Zwahashu.

She started out her career as a speechless actress on the stage and then moved on to being a presenter.
