Life is a living hell for a 15-year-old mother after her two-week-old infant Thembelihle was stolen from her on Wednesday.
Zandile Sibisi, from Ngonokwakhe near Dundee in northern KwaZulu-Natal, said a strange woman arrived at her home and asked for a place to sleep because she lived a long distance away and was looking for a job in Dundee. The family offered her a place to sleep.
"In the morning when I was preparing to go to the clinic, she offered to accompany me.
"She [did not look] suspicious and I welcomed her good gesture of coming to the clinic with me," Sibisi said.
Sibisi said that after they had finished consulting with a doctor, the woman sent her to buy drinks in a nearby store and that was the last time she saw her baby and the woman.
"When I returned, she was nowhere to be seen with my baby," Sibisi said.
Captain Shooz Magudulela confirmed the incident. He said the woman had lied to the family and pretended to be looking for employment.
"We are investigating a case of kidnapping and we urge anyone who might have seen or know the whereabouts of the suspect to contact us," Magudulela said.
The tearful mother said: "All I am praying for is the safe return of my baby. She is such a sweet baby and I don't know how is she living without me.
"I have not been able to eat since her disappearance because I don't even know if she eats anything wherever she is."
A neighbour, Thembeka Ngcobo, 49, said: "We only hear about these things in the media and I never imagined it happening right under my nose.
"We won't trust anyone who comes to our houses after this incident," she said.
