A 50-year-old man was found dead with severe neck and head injuries in a plantation at Worlds View in Pietermaritzburg yesterday.
Though details were still sketchy, it is alleged that the deceased was killed by people he had employed to work at the plantation.
Superintendent Joshua Gwala, a police spokesman, said they received a murder report yesterday afternoon.
"On arrival at the scene we found the body of a male. He had sustained severe neck and head injuries," he said.
Gwala said their preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased, who was contracted by the department of water affairs and forestry to cut the trees, had picked up four casual workers at the France area in the morning.
He left the employees at the site in Worlds View and went home.
"It is alleged that while at home he received a telephone call from one of the workers, who reported that the other three casual workers were reluctant to work," he said.
"Thereafter the employer got into his vehicle and proceeded to the site."
Police believe that on his arrival at the site he was attacked by the three workers, believed to be armed with a panga.
The suspects then got into the deceased's vehicle, a blue Mazda 323 sedan, registration number NP50315 and sped away. The vehicle is still missing.
At the scene police found a panga that is believed to be the murder weapon.
Police have appealed to anyone who can help with their investigation to provide them with information regarding this incident.
They should contact the investigating officer, Inspector Brad Lancaster, on telephone number 033-845-6527 or Crime Stop on 08600-10111.
Police said they could not identify the deceased until his next of kin had been informed.
No arrests have been made.
