Athletics South Africa (ASA) will stage the national junior and youth championships in Pretoria this weekend and more than 1500 athletes from across the country are expected to take part.

ASA will use this biennial event to select a national team to represent the country at the World Youth Championships in Ostrava in the Czech Republic from July 11 to 15.

The Pretoria event will be held at Pilditch Stadium on Friday and Saturday.

"All the athletes who finish within the top two brackets within the IAAF qualification standards in their respective meetings will make it in the provisional team for the world junior and youth championships," Molatelo Malehopo, ASA's development officer, said.

"We are positive that we will assemble a team that will make South Africa proud at the international competition. We are certainly not going to Ostrava to add to the numbers but to compete for medals. We are keen to pocket more medals this time round after we managed to get five in the last event in Marrakesh in Morocco in 2005."

Team South Africa got three gold medals, one silver and one bronze and finished number six overall at the Morocco event.
