A Port Elizabeth man, Mzamo Headman Nelani, 46, was shot dead by police early yesterday morning after he stabbed two policemen who were trying to arrest him in New Brighton.

Police spokesman Captain Verna Brink said the tussle with Nelani started when his wife Nomawethu, 46, laid a complaint against her estranged husband for domestic violence with the police.

Brink said police advised her to press charges.

"Officers picked her up to open the case and also searched for the husband," she said.

Brink said while police were busy with the case, a taxi stopped in front of her house.

Nelani got out of the taxi, went to the house and allegedly started breaking windows and doors.

Brink said the man gained entry and began breaking "everything inside the house".

Police tried to arrest him, but he fought them off.

"He told the police he was not scared of them, and if they wanted to fight with him they must come and arrest him," said Brink.

Police used pepper spray in an attempt to control Nelani, but that did not help.

Brink said police had to call for backup after they realised that the matter was far from over.

Police used a stun grenade, but Nelani ran out of the house through the back door.

He bumped into two police officers, who were among those who had surrounded the house, and stabbed them with a knife.

One of the officers was stabbed in the arm and rib. His colleague was stabbed in the back.

One of the policemen shot Nelani dead.

The two injured officers, one of whom collapsed on the scene amid heavy bleeding, were rushed to Greenacres Hospital.

Nomawethu said she had left her abusive husband four years ago, but their marriage had not yet been nullified.

Nomawethu said she was in the process of filing for a divorce.
