Mpumalanga Mvela Golden League side, Witbank Spurs, did not enjoy their Easter weekend.
Their clubhouse was raided by police and key players were allegedly assaulted early yesterday morning. The players are Samuel Eboule (Cameroon), Omega Ngwenya (Barberton), Mputho Mohatle (Limpopo) and Dikotso Ntho (Bloemfontein).
The clubhouse, at 30 Hertzog Street, Witbank, was raided by police at about 5am. They allegedly did not ask the players who they were and did not produce a search warrant.
"When I went to the Witbank police station today (Monday) they told me they had raided the house because on March 30 there had been a robbery on the same street and they were expecting the clubhouse to be next," said Thabo Moroape, Spurs' spokesman.
Witbank police station commissioner Amos Mabunda, said they had received many complaints of assault at the weekend and they would investigate all of them. He declined to comment further.
Moroape said: "This has crippled our team's momentum to gain a spot in the play-offs."
Spurs next game will be against Bay United on April 21. The game will take place at KaNyamazane Stadium near Nelspruit, but only if the Ehlanzeni District municipality in Nelspruit and the Mpumalanga department of arts, sports and recreation, lend a helping hand to Spurs.
The club have asked for financial assistance.
