UDM leader Bantu Holomisa believes the objections against the construction of a Cape Town stadium that will host the World Cup semifinals are not racially motivated.
He said he would like the stadium to be built closer to Cape Flats townships. His view comes in the wake of the Cape Town Environmental Protection Association's attempt to stop the construction of the stadium.
The organisation argued in papers before the Cape high court that the city and province did not follow due process when they decided on the venue.
Holomisa said the group does have a credible argument because the possibility of traffic congestion and the fact that the huge construction would block their "scenic view" of the ocean.
But he believes the organisation does not have a case.
"If they win the court case, the 2010 local organising committee [LOC] should have a plan B."
He said Green Point Stadium was also not an ideal venue because of the lack of space, especially for small business.
Another negative factor is that it is "far from major suburbs" and townships.
"It does not make sense," Holomisa said.
City spokesman Pieter Cronje confirmed that the LOC planned to defend the matter in court.
Meanwhile, the Freedom Front Plus (FF+) is calling for a meeting with Danny Jordan, chief executive of the LOC, "to ensure that Pretoria's name is recognised".
FF+ spokesman Willie Spies said that "this is because Tshwane metro insisted on the use of the name Tshwane instead of Pretoria in the advertising material".
