Limpopo is expecting more than four million visitors to the province this Easter weekend, including throngs of pilgrims travelling to Moria near Polokwane.
Bennie Boshielo, chief executive of tourism and parks in the province, said: "We are expecting high volumes of tourists, as well as people who work in neighbouring provinces.
"Our message is simple and clear: respect the rules of the road.
"We appeal to drivers to be alert and to take frequent breaks for the overall safety of passengers and other road users.
"Please do not drive under the influence of alcohol and please also obey all of the traffic warnings such as speed limits."
Though the focus is mainly on buses and taxis, traffic patterns have changed over the past few years with more people travelling in their own vehicles - a factor which has contributed to congestion on the roads.
Additional traffic police and emergency services personnel will be deployed to help with the increase in traffic and enforce the safety message.
Limpopo has become known for its historic cultural heritage, outdoor activities, wildlife, health and wellness facilities. It is also home to the Rain Queen Modjaji, who is internationally renowned for her rainmaking powers.
Iconic baobab trees and the Kingdom of Mapungubwe are also attractions.
"We urge visitors to explore Limpopo's splendour. One of the province's differentiating features is our deep-rooted hospitality. We know how to look after visitors because we understand their economic value, " Boshielo said.
