Excellence prepare for Chile

Chile-bound Transnet Football School of Excellence have lined up a friendly against Africa Youth Sports Academy to wrap up preparations for the World Schools Soccer Cup.

The biennial development tournament is played under the auspices of the International Schools Sports Federation. Friday's game will be against the Jazzy Queen Legodi-guided Youth Sports Academy at the Excellence grounds at 3.30pm.

"Our boys are already back in camp after we gave them a few days off to be with their families," said Dan Malesela, head coach of Excellence."

The Chile tournament will be played in Santiago, with Excellence scheduled to play their first match on April 15. Excellence qualified to represent South Africa after winning the 2006 MTN Under-16 Soccer Cup in Durban.

The soccer academy will be making their second appearance in the tournament after finishing fourth in 1998.

South Africa are in Group A, which includes Iran, Luxembourg, Slovenia, Belgium the hosts Chile, who will be represented by two schools.

"We are ready for the tournament, all the other participants are a closed book to us. The problem is that these are schools, you cannot compare them on the strength of their national teams," said Malesela.

Excellence are the only Africans taking part. A total of 21 boys' and 12 girls' teams will take part in the tournament.
