All 99 vehicle testing stations, registering offices and driver's licence testing centres in North West will be closed for a week from today.
North West Traffic Department spokesman Matshube Mfoloe said the offices would be closed to replace ageing technology.
Mfoloe said this would enable "traffic-related information systems to be transferred from the old national transport information system (Natis) to the new advanced system called eNatis".
The 14-year-old Natis system is the national register that officials use to enforce the National Traffic Act, said Mfoloe.
The upgrade means that in future some road-related services will be available via ATMs and the Internet.
The closure means the following transactions in the province will not be able to processed for the next seven days:
l renewal of vehicle licenses;
l registration of vehicles;
l roadworthy tests; and
l applications for and tests for learner's and driver's licences.
"All systems are expected to be running smoothly from Friday April 13," said Mfoloe. - Sapa
