Teenage gospel whizz-kid scores with new CD
She is only 15, but Gabi Mthethwa is already making an impression on the local gospel scene with her new CD Dance with Jesus.
Last Sunday Gabi performed to a full house at the Rhema Church in Soweto, and her album has had its share of airtime on the country's premier gospel show Gospel Gold, thus cementing her status as one of the artists to watch on the gospel scene now and in the future.
Born in Orange Farm, south of Johannesburg, Gabi is a grade 10 pupil at a local high school.
"I would like to study chemical engineering at varsity as I think that is where the challenge is for me," she says.
But for now Gabi is concentrating on her music career.
"My singing career started in the church, the Twelfth Apostolic Church Choir, where I am a member of the youth choir.
"My mother is also a member of the church choir, and my father is the conductor of the same choir.
"Gospel comes naturally to me when it comes to composing music," Gabi says.
Though she listens to hip-hop and Afro-pop, Gabi maintains that her music is still grounded in gospel music.
Asked who had most inspired her, Gabi named Dumi Mkokstad.
"He is a really powerful gospel singer," she said.
