Limpopo businessman Tom Boya has thrown a surprise party for one of the province's centenarians, Zacharia Marumo, who turned 105 at the weekend.

Boya did not know Marumo previously, but was inspired by the fact that he is possibly the oldest person at Doornspruit village in GaMashashane, west of Polokwane.

Marumo's neighbour, Frans Mokwatlo, made Boya aware of Marumo's plight, and Boya did not waste time in meeting the old man.

Boya, who has been travelling around the province organising birthday parties for the centenarians, took Marumo some presents, which included a warm blanket and sweets.

"We need to do more, especially for the elderly. Some of them still have to be helped to access pension grants. Old people are our source of inspiration," Boya said.

Marumo was born in 1902 and has participated in both world wars.

At his ripe old age, he can still speak English fluently.
