A total of 1,5 million bricks will be used for the construction of the Peter Mokaba Sports Complex, a new Limpopo facility that will be one of the hosts of the 2010 World Cup.
Teboho Nchapha, the project manager, said he was delighted that the process of building the world-class facility was now under way.
He said the new sports complex, which is being built near the existing Peter Mokaba Stadium, will accommodate 45 395 people.
Nchapha said that will include 5000 seats for members of the media, while there will also be 504 VIP seats and a further 12 VIP boxes, each with a capacity of 20 people.
"There will also be two lounges with a capacity of 36 people each. In addition, we will also have other facilities like dressing rooms, medical facility and a players' lounge.
"We anticipate that the project will create thousands of jobs."
Nchapha said they re confident of delivering a state-of-the-art facility on time.
On the issue of jobs, he said people will be employed in various fields linked to construction and other related matters.
The new stadium, which is named after the former youth leader and Member of Parliament, will cost R870 million. It will be completed in 2009.
Nakedi Lekota, Safa executive committee member, said: "As a soccer family in Limpopo, we are delighted that the new Peter Mokaba Stadium is being constructed.
"We would like to thank Premier Sello Moloto and Polokwane mayor Thabo Makunyane for ensuring that funds were available to start with the project."
Percy Majola, a Seshego-based soccer follower, said: "It's good that the people of Limpopo will also be able to have a world-class stadium.
"The World Cup will also enable us to watch some of the best players in the world. The most important thing is that our province in general will also benefit economically."
Pule Monama, a prominent Limpopo businessman, said: "This is a golden opportunity where we should all come up with creative ideas on how to benefit.
"You may be in communications, marketing, events management, tourism, accommodation, information technology - there is a huge opportunity for all to benefit."
