"We can save one more life," said Sister Anne, 35, before plunging back into the burning hospice with another nun at the Maria Ratschitz Mission, near Dundee.

Moments later flames engulfed the thatched roof, which collapsed, killing Sister Anne and three patients, said Wasbank police spokesman Inspector TPHlatshwayo.

Hlatshwayo said the fire started on Saturday night and an enquiry had been opened to establish its cause.

Sister Anne trained as a teacher and had been with the m ission for two years .

Sister Irmingard said: "She is a heroine in her heart. I suppose if you die saving a life, it's worth it." - Sapa
