KHARTOUM - Gunmen killed five members of the African peacekeeping contingent in Darfur at the weekend.

KHARTOUM - Gunmen killed five members of the African peacekeeping contingent in Darfur at the weekend.

It was the deadliest attack on the embattled contingent since it was first deployed in the western Sudanese region in 2004, a Darfur spokesman said yesterday.

Nureddin Mezni said: "The soldiers were attacked by armed men while guarding a watering point in Umm Barru." - Sapa
