What has infected our justice system?

With sadness we note the sentencing of Pinky Mabuza, a "nurse", for infecting her seven-year-old stepson with the HI virus by injection.

With sadness we note the sentencing of Pinky Mabuza, a "nurse", for infecting her seven-year-old stepson with the HI virus by injection.

The crime is almost the same as a slow death sentence for the seven-year-old.

For Nkululeko Nxesi, director of the National Association of People Living with HIV-Aids, to say justice was done, proves that he is unfit to hold his position.

What is wrong with our justice system?

The fine plus payment for the victim's treatment with antiretrovirals for the rest of his life and compensation for the trauma and other future expenses would have been a more just sentencing.

What guarantees does the child have for his future treatment? The R10000 doesn't compensate for the stress and trauma he'll have in future, nor for his treatment.

For the defence to argue the accused has an important role to play in the community as a professional nurse is as laughable as the five-year jail sentence or R10000.

Is real justice in South Africa now only available to the rich and the politically connected while there is almost none for the poor?

Sad.
