WARSAW - The new Roman Catholic archbishop of Warsaw formally assumed his duties yesterday, ending a saga that started in January when the pope's original appointee resigned amid reports that he had been a communist informer.

The new appointee, Kazimierz Nycz, 57, the former bishop of Koszalin-Kolobrzeg in northern Poland, is a strong supporter of the "decommunisation" of the Polish church.

Nycz replaces Stanislaw Wielgus, bishop of Plock, who succeeded Cardinal Jozef Glemp as the primate of the church in Poland. - Sapa
