Children at a Soweto orphanage could not believe their luck when they were visited by the gospel group Progress yesterday.
The seven-member group from Orlando, Soweto, spent most of the day with the children at the Othandweni Children's Home in Mofolo.
Apart from performing to the excited crowd, the group also brought toys and clothes for the children.
Sipho Duma, the group's leader, said: "Our mission is to spread love and children are a good place to start."
Formed in 1999, Progress has performed alongside such gospel heavyweights as Rebecca Malope, Deborah Fraser and Jabu Hlongwane.
Duma said the group was surprised by the reaction they got from the children.
"We thought they would be bored," he said.
"Most young people are used to kwaito and house music."
The children were surprised to see the all-male group cooking food for them.
"They looked at us with this surprised look because they are used to women cooking for them at the home," Duma said.
Duma stressed the importance of different churches working together to curb the ills of society.
"Our group comprises members from different churches, but we work together nicely.
"We all have one aim, which is to change people's lives through music," he said.
