MAPUTO - More than a week after the armoury blasts in Mozambique, nine corpses have not yet been claimed from the Maputo Central Hospital mortuary, it was reported yesterday.

The independent newspaper, O Pais, in its online edition quoted sources who said all nine died in the Malhazine blasts on March 22.

According to government statistics the death toll of the blasts has reached 102 and more than 500 people were injured.

More than 40 are still receiving treatment in Maputo and Matola hospitals.

The government has provided help with the burial of the victims and promised to build houses destroyed in the blasts.

A military spokesman has attributed the blasts, which occurred for a third time at the armoury, to high temperatures.

But government critics have alleged the blasts were caused by the government's "negligence".

A commission of inquiry that was set up by President Armando Guebuza, pictured, is expected to present its report this week. - Sapa
