Teams moan as Ehlanzeni region trims streams

Safa Ehlanzeni will reduce its SAB Regional streams from five to two next season.

Brainz Zulu, Safa secretary in the region, said the reason for chopping the streams is because there were too many teams and as a result, the league was not properly run.

He said the standard was also declining as few teams were competitive in the matches between the local football associations.

"We are going to take the top five teams in each stream, which is equal to 25. Then we will promote the champions in each of our five local associations and the two spaces will be left for the two teams to be relegated from the Vodacom league," said Zulu. "The two streams will comprise 16 teams each."

But some teams are unhappy about the decision.

Kenneth Mamba of Santos said: "The streams were correctly divided into two from the beginning, while the league was called the Castle Regional League. But because our administrators wanted to fill their pockets they extended the streams, without explanation."

Another disgruntled team owner, Derrick Sibanyoni of Sundowns, said had he known that so many teams would be relegated, he would not have bought his team's status this year.

"I spend a lot of money on the team," fumed Sibanyoni.
