MAPUTO - Damage to Mozambique's national electricity utility as a result of the Malhazine armoury blasts have been estimated at more than R14million.

"The explosion has resulted in the destruction of substations and electricity lines that supply the provinces of Gaza and Inhambane," said a spokesman for the national electricity utility (EDM).

EDM's chairman, Manuel Cuambe, said the destruction caused by last week's blast came after the company's infrastructure had been severely damaged by floods and cyclone Favio in the central and southern provinces.

Military sources blamed the blasts on the particularly hot weather, but others allege government negligence. - Sapa
