Internationally acclaimed photographer Sello Moikangoa died at Germiston Hospital on Thursday last week after a short illness.
Born in Sophiatown on August 28, 55 years ago, Moikangoa made a name for himself working for publications such as the Sunday Times, Sowetan and the now defunct Weekend World.
Like many professional photographers, he was self-taught.
During the June 16 1976 Soweto uprisings, he was there to document the brutality of the security police against unarmed school children.
Moikangoa was educated at the Leratadima and Mohaung primary schools. He completed standard six.
While at Mohaung, his soccer skills were unearthed.
At Goronyane Secondary School, in Thaba Nchu, he became a household name while playing for Moroka Zebras.
When he could not continue his schooling he went to work to support his family.
While working at Dorkey House, he tried his hand at photography. He covered soccer matches, and political and social events.
Moikangoa also took pictures for Soweto Chambers, a publication owned by the Soweto Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
His other love, theatre, saw him rubbing shoulders with the likes of Richard Roundtree, Joe Mafela, Sam Williams, Pat Seboko, Ken Gampu and Mabunu Sabela.
He starred asSekgo in a TV series called Mampudi.
He also acted in TV films such as Monna o diatla di loleya, Abafana baMaroller Skates, and Seagent Samadula.
He combined acting and photography and became a film cameraman.
He made films such as Ngwanaka Ngwanaka o kae, Bophelo ke Semphego, Vicious Cycles and In the Name of Love.
He is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters.
The funeral service will be tomorrow at St Phillip's Anglican Church, Thokoza, at 8am. The cortege will leave for Schoeman Cemetery at 11am.
