The police are investigating a case of kidnapping after a two-year-old girl, Alwande Xulu, went missing while playing in the yard of her home in Plessislaer, in Imbali, near Pietermaritzburg.

Police reported that Alwande's mother, Thandeka Xulu, 24, returned from work and found that her little daughter was missing.

Captain Joshua Gwala said it had been established that Alwande had been left in the care of a 21-year-old child-minder for the day.

"It is believed that at about 1.30pm, while Alwande was playing in the yard, the child's aunt left the house ," said Gwala.

Gwala said a few minutes later the child-minder looked for Alwande and could not find her. She assumed that the child had left the house with her aunt.

"Shortly after, the aunt was contacted and it was ascertained that the child had not left the house with her.

"An extensive search was launched immediately in the vicinity without success.

Alwande was wearing blue jeans, a pink jacket and brown boots. She is light complexioned and has small dreadlocks.

Anyone with information regarding the child's whereabouts should contact Captain Roseburn Mngadi on 033-398-9776 or 083-742-8125, or Crime Stop on the toll-free number 08600-10111. Informants may be anonymous.
