The safety campaign "Take Charge: Crime Stops With Me" will be launched at Freedom Square in Kliptown, south of Johannesburg, tomorrow morning.

The Gauteng provincial government adopted a new strategy in August for fighting serious and violent crime.

Councillor Thomas Phakathi said: "We want to send a strong message to residents and visitors alike that we are intensifying our efforts to make the city safer."

He said the provincial government would beef up the police force, acquire the latest technology and work more closely with other law enforcement agencies.

"The more everyone is involved in this campaign, the less room there will be for criminals to operate," he said.

"The 'Take Charge' campaign will rely heavily on communities to become sources of information by reporting crime, adopting an attitude of zero tolerance of crime and making the environment unwelcome for criminals."

The launch starts at 10am and community members are invited to join the fight against crime.

The MEC for community safety, Firoz Cachalia, and Premier Mbhazima Shilowa will speak at the launch.
