Smoke out all drug factories

The proliferation of drugs undoubtedly poses a great danger to our society - as is the case elsewhere across the world.

The proliferation of drugs undoubtedly poses a great danger to our society - as is the case elsewhere across the world.

Societies battling moral decadence caused by increasing substance abuse among the youth are invariably caught in the grip of crime. This is because drug smuggling is the oil that drives the scourge of crime.

In recent years, there has been growing evidence of druglords and syndicates targeting townships for their nefarious activities. The breakdown of discipline in many township and city schools is symptomatic of growing drug abuse among pupils. Until now, evidence of drug manufacturing factories spreading to townships has been largely anecdotal.

Hence the significance of this week's police drug bust, which involved raids on houses where drugs were allegedly manufactured on the East Rand this week. It exposes this alarming trend.

A woman and her former husband were arrested for allegedly running a Mandrax manufacturing factory in Spruitview. This factory might just be the tip of the iceberg as the availability of drugs in townships suggests the existence of similar makeshift factories elsewhere.

It is in the interests of various communities to help police ferret out these syndicates hellbent on destroying the future of our children.
