A great family sedan that is very safe with sufficient power, space and lots of luxuries. That is in short how one can describe our used test model, the 2006 model Mercedes-Benz C180K Classic in automatic guise from McCarthy Pretoria.
In my opinion, the C-Class is by far one of the best sedans in this segment of the market and has the kind of luxury feel that one expects to find in larger and much more expensive luxury cars.
The overall package provided by the C-Class is difficult to match. You get class-leading safety features, powerful engines, loads of luxury and space in one car. The 1,8-litre four-cylinder powerplant is one of the smoothest in the small luxury segment and, coupled with a 5-speed automatic transmission delivering power to the rear wheels, it certainly delivers a satisfying driving experience. The engine produces 105kW and 220Nm which will get you up to a maximum speed of more than 200kmh, while the 0-100kmh sprint will take you about 9s.
On the road our test model had little to almost no interior noise. It proved to be a Merc in every sense.
The suspension of the C-Class is designed to soak up every bump, in so provide a very pleasant driving experience. Ride quality under all circumstances was good and with the electronic stability programme (ESP), you can be assured that you won't easily lose control in nasty weather conditions.
The car has only 36000km on the clock. The interior of the car as well as the exterior is in pristine condition. The C180K makes for the perfect family sedan as well as the perfect car for day-to-day use by businessmen and yuppies alike. With more than enough torque it also ensures that carrying the luggage and family is a breeze.
The all-black interior with black leather seats certainly looks the part, even quite sporty for an entry-level Benz.
Safety features include an anti-lock braking system with electronic stability programme (ESP), six airbags (dual front, side and curtain), multi-functional steering wheel and Neck-Pro headrests that will prevent a whiplash injury in the event of an accident.
Luxuries include a front-loading CD-player, electric windows, climate control, aircon, power steering and leather upholstery.
The tyres will still be good for another 20000km plus.
For almost R30000 less than the price of a new one, it certainly makes a lot of sense buying our used vehicle of the week.
