The South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) is happy about the suspension of a school principal who allegedly hired hit men to kill his two teachers.

KwaZulu-Natal Education MEC Ina Cronje suspended Anton Mathenjwa, a principal at Hlokohloko High School and former senior member of Sadtu, following his arrest in connection with the murder of Bonisiwe Mthenjane and Phindile Ntuli.

Mthenjane and Ntuli were powerful members of the National Teachers Union.

Sadtu's spokesman Sipho Nkosi said he hoped that Mathenjwa's suspension would send out a message to all principals.

"He is a principal. He was supposed to protect the teachers. What he did is unacceptable, criminal and unprofessional," said Nkosi.

Mathenjwa, a former treasurer of Sadtu in the Obonjeni district, appeared in court on Monday.
