The 2010 Local Organising Committee plans to conduct an audit on the state of African football to develop a programme of action to strengthen the sport as a viable commercial business.

This was one of the recommendations at the recent African Union International Year of African Football/2010 World Cup Legacy technical workshop in Pretoria.

Eddie Maloka, head of the LOC African Legacy Project, described it as a fruitful workshop that helped to pave the way forward for his directorate.

"It was agreed that we should establish a steering committee made up of AU representatives, the government, the LOC, CAF and the United Nations."

The recommendations include:

l Developing a communication strategy on the continental 2010 World Cup Legacy Programme, building on the International Year of African Football;

l Assisting in preparations for the first conference of African ministers of sport;

l Reviving and strengthening the African Women in Sports Association;

l Developing a continental framework on sport policy in Africa, including the harmonisation of free movement of sports persons and improvement in conditions of service of football players;

l Initiating campaigns using football to contribute to addressing socioeconomic problems;

l Conducting a feasibility study on the establishment or strengthening of African sports academies;

l Establishing a steering committee to identify three continental flagship projects of the various projects identified by the workshop;

l Initiating campaigns on the theme of "sports for peace";

l Developing a programme in support of all qualifying teams so that Africa can win the World Cup; and

l Supporting the operation of the continental volunteer programme for the 2010 World Cup.
