Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town are involved in a battle to host the International Broadcasting Centre (IBC) for the 2010 World Cup.
The three metros submitted their written proposals to the Local Organising Committee last week detailing the technical services offered.
As is the case at all the major global competitions like the Olympics and Commonwealth Games, the centre will serve as the broadcasting hub for the World Cup.
The LOC have started assessing the bids from the three metros. The centre will operate on a 24-hour basis for the duration of the World Cup.
It will be used by more than 10 000 accredited journalists and technicians who will be covering the six-week tournament.
Tim Modise and Tumi Makgabo, 2010 LOC communications director and officer, were not available to comment on the latest development regarding the process.
Meanwhile, Cape Town's bid to host the broadcast centre has received a financial boost from the Western Cape provincial government's department of sports and culture.
Whitey Jacob, the provincial MEC for sport and culture, said the department was giving R500 000 to the project.
Jacob said the estimated economic injection to Western Cape was expected to exceed R1 billion.
The successful bidder will be named by world soccer governing body Fifa in the next few days.
