Die-hard fans of the BMW M3 will be thrilled to know that their favourite car is to be fitted with a V8 engine to further enhance its performance.

After 15 years and two model generations, the trendsetting six-cylinder car has now found its successor which, with its eight-cylinder power unit, has more power and a higher top speed.

This latest engine version, developing a supreme 252kW - and acknowledged several times as "Engine of the Year" - made the BMW M3 one of the greatest performers in the high-performance sports car segment and a worldwide best seller.

The new M3 engine has a displacement of 3999cc with a maximum output of 309kW and peak torque of 400Nm.

The manufacturers believe that the dimensions of the new V8 engine match the ideal concept of the most demanding engine designers.

The new engine has many features in common with the latest BMW Formula 1 power unit. BMW says that various technological concepts and principles, production processes and materials have been carried over from the Formula 1 engine to the drivetrain of the new BMW M3.

To further enhance the efficiency of the new V8 power unit, brake energy regeneration ensures intelligent engine-current management, concentrating the generation of electric power for the on-board network on the overrun phases and the application of the brakes. This serves to charge the car's battery without tapping on engine power and, accordingly on the energy contained in the fuel burnt as long as the engine is running under power. On the other hand, when you accelerate the alternator normally remains disconnected.

Apart from particularly efficient generation of electric current, this also helps to provide more drive power during acceleration.
